Maxwell (1831-1879): Theoretical physicist and
mathematician. Synthesized all previous knowledge of electricity and magnetism into Maxwell's
equations. Concluded that light is electromagnetic radiation.
Hertz (1857-1894): Experimental physicist. First to
demonstrate the existence of electromagnetic waves by building an apparatus (incl. the first
dipole antenna) to produce and detect
radio waves.
Fizeau's work triggered further improvements in measuring the speed of light, leading to the discovery of its constancy in free space,
which caused Einstein to develop the relativity theory.
